It is that time of year again! All the sakura Japanese candy and popular Japanese snacks are coming out from hibernation! This also includes Starbucks Japan who has an annual sakura themed flavor. This year, the released a Strawberry Sakura Mochi drink! We here at TokyoTreat knew we needed to try it out, just like we did with the Sublime Ruby Kit Kats, and discover how exactly mochi and frappuccinos go together. We grabbed our coats, our wallets, and a Japanese candy box just in case, and started on our journey to the closest Starbucks!
When we entered the store, the bright pink reflections overtook us as the store was packed with cute, seasonal sakura themed tumblers, mugs, and cups! We loved seasonal designs and we were tempted to take those home instead. However, we kept strong and focused once more on the goal ahead!
Vanessa had been so antsy while awaiting her drink, so it is no surprise that the moment it was finished she dove right in! You can see how the pink sakura color of the frappaccino even matches her pink sweater! She said that the flavor was a very sweet, sakura taste with a mild strawberry milk taste. The bits of mochi were very similar to tapioca balls. While she has had many sakura flavored Japanese snacks, this was definitely a new take on the seasonal flavor that she enjoyed!
On the top of the frappaccino, there are yummy white chocolate bits mixed with a soft sakura strawberry sauce. Beneath that is the classic whipped cream topping. The mochi was generally all at the bottom and would stay there until one mixes up their drink. Sipping a fusion of mochi, strawberry, and sakura was a vivid burst of flavor that we didn't quite expect when we first ordered this drink.
Nic also really got into the mood and ended up really appreciating this year's sakura frappaccino! He definitely wished this was a year long drink so he could enjoy this whenever he liked alongside all his favorite popular Japanese snacks.
Overall, we felt this was a very successful, fun seasonal Starbucks Japan drink! We are excited to try out the rest of the flavors that come out throughout the year! Let us know in the comments below if you are a fan of sakura flavored Japanese snacks!
