As winter approaches in Japan, one thing becomes a household essential: the kotatsu. This cozy furniture is more than just a table—it’s a source of warmth, comfort, and tradition. A kotatsu, equipped with a heater and a blanket, is the ultimate spot for keeping warm during the colder months. Let’s dive into what makes the kotatsu unique and why you might want to invest in one this winter!

What is a kotatsu?

A kotatsu is a low wooden table covered with a thick blanket and a heat source underneath. It’s designed so you can sit on the floor and tuck your legs underneath the table, where the blanket traps the heat, creating a warm cocoon.

Traditionally, the heat came from a charcoal brazier placed beneath the table, but modern kotatsu use electric heaters for safety and convenience. The blanket, or futon, drapes over the table’s edges, keeping the heat in and making it an ultra-cozy space.

For many in Japan, the kotatsu is more than just a way to stay warm—it symbolizes family gatherings and relaxation. During the colder months, families often spend hours sitting around the kotatsu. They enjoy meals, playing games, or simply chatting while staying nice and toasty together.

When was it invented?

The concept of the kotatsu dates back to the 14th century, during the Muromachi period (1336-1573), when people used charcoal hearths for heating. The early versions were under the floor, with a hole dug underneath to allow heat to rise. These early kotatsu evolved, eventually becoming the mobile, electric-heated tables we know today.

The modern electric kotatsu became popular in the mid-20th century as Japan shifted towards more Western-style homes. This made it easier to use the kotatsu in different rooms without needing a built-in hearth. Today, the kotatsu remains a beloved feature of many Japanese households, providing warmth and comfort through winter.

While the kotatsu is a staple for staying warm, there are plenty of other ways to beat the cold in Japan! Let’s look at some of the most popular methods for keeping cozy during the winter.

Space heater

If you’re looking for an easy way to warm up a room, a space heater is a great option. These portable heaters, including electric and gas-powered models, come in various sizes and types. They’re perfect for heating a small area quickly, making them ideal for bedrooms or living rooms. Place it where you need extra warmth, and you’ll be toasty soon!

Yutanpo

A yutanpo is a traditional Japanese hot water bottle that keeps warm at night. These durable, often metal or ceramic containers are filled with hot water and placed under the covers to provide warmth for hours.

Yutanpo are especially popular in regions where it gets particularly cold, as they offer a simple, eco-friendly way to stay warm without using electricity. They’ve become more popular in recent years due to their effectiveness and energy-saving appeal. Plus, they’re super cozy to cuddle with on a chilly night!

Wear Heattech innerwear

Another great way to stay warm is to layer with Heattech innerwear. Developed by the popular Japanese brand Uniqlo, Heattech garments are made with special fibers that trap heat and keep you insulated, making them ideal for wearing under regular clothes. They come in various styles, including shirts, leggings, and socks, so you can stay warm no matter how cold it gets outside.

Kairo heat packs

Kairo heat packs are the way to go when you need instant warmth. These disposable heat packs generate heat when activated and can be placed in pockets, gloves, or even shoes to keep you warm on the go.
