Some combinations in history have achieved legendary status: peanut butter and jelly, French fries and ketchup, and…Sanrio Puroland and zombies? Okay, so maybe that last entry might not be as popular as the others, but for two special spooky nights this summer, people experienced a spine-chilling adventure in Hello Kitty’s theme park.
The “Obaken Zombieland in Sanrio Puroland: Rebirth Code” event features many zombies, scares, and thrills…just in Hello Kitty’s theme park. But don’t worry, Hello Kitty and her friends are all okay, it’s just her park that gets a terrifying makeover!
True to its name, Sanrio Puroland is a theme park dedicated to everyone’s favorite white kitty cat, Hello Kitty, located in Tama New Town, Tokyo. The park is full of super cute rides, cafes, and gift shops that all celebrate Hello Kitty and all her friends.
The first floor features show stages, themed factory attractions, shops, and dining areas all centered around the Wisdom Tree Stage. On the second floor, you’ll find more rides like the popular Sanrio Character Boat Ride, along with shops and photo spots overlooking the floor below.
The third floor mainly houses large stores—including the Entrance Shop—and essential services such as lockers and an information desk. The top, fourth floor offers several restaurants and specialty shops. It’s easy to explore the park while enjoying convenient amenities on every level.
Overall, it is an adorable park to visit, even for those who aren’t diehard Sanrio fans. It’s also the perfect place to bring young children or someone special for a carefree date. Well, just as long as the visit doesn’t occur during the zombie event.
Before discussing this event, NO, Hello Kitty has not turned into a zombie. Neither she nor any of her friends have been turned into the undead. Sanrio fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Instead of being chased by ravenous cat ghouls and puppy dog ghouls, visitors to the park will be attacked. The usual garden variety zombies roam all through Sanrio Puroland.
The Obaken Zombieland in Sanrio Puroland: Rebirth Code event, put together by the company Obaken, happened on June 28th and July 5th. It put visitors in the tense situation of surviving a zombie outbreak. Each visitor was considered “infected” upon entering the park. The goal was to complete missions in seven areas while avoiding roaming zombies.

Visitors who complete their missions and avoid being grabbed by the bloody ghouls can claim a super cool prize at the event’s end. It is important to know the event is pre-register only. Only 1000 visitors are allowed each night. People cannot just show up at the gates and walk in.
Also, due to the super spooky nature of the experience, attendees under the age of 16 are strictly prohibited. The event specifically states that only people who are junior high school age and above are allowed to enter. While no one who attends will get hurt, having a bunch of blood-soaked zombies chasing after them would definitely be too much for younger visitors.
To best ensure that no younger visitors accidentally get caught up in the scares, once the park closes for the day, it transforms into the zombie special at 7PM. While it’s a shame the event only happens twice during the summer, the exclusivity makes it all the more special.
It might seem odd to have a zombie event in the middle of summer, but Japan is unique in that it celebrates the spookiest time of the year in the summer months. They believe scary stories and spooky events can help cool people off from the hot weather by giving them chills down their backs.
As such, summertime is scary in Japan, so the zombie event is coming to Sanrio Puroland during June and July. It’s a highly exclusive event, even moreso considering it’s celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. And if Japan is famous for anything, it’s for going all-in for its special park events.
At first glance, it might seem like a wildly unnecessary juxtaposition: Hello Kitty and zombies. But once you understand the famous white kitty cat has nothing to do with it, it makes more sense. Besides, experiencing a real-life zombie outbreak without worrying about being eaten alive is super cool.
Obaken is famous throughout Tokyo for its other events and themed cafes. Visitors know they are walking into the best of the best when they attend the event. For anyone thirsting for the utmost in summertime spills and chills, the “Obaken Zombieland in Sanrio Puroland: Rebirth Code” event cannot be missed. Just make sure to remind yourself it’s all a game…right?
