If you're a fan of Japanese culture, visiting Tokyo probably is (or has been) on your bucket list. Tokyo is the biggest city in the world with so many places to discover. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to go, whether it is to get anime goodies, to visit temples or to buy the latest harajuku fashion there are certain things that everyone would agree on that makes Tokyo a great place. If you fell in love with Tokyo and decide you want to move here, these are 10 things that I find awesome about the Tokyo life!
1. Clean
For Tokyo being the biggest city it is surprisingly clean! You hardly find litter, even at stations or places like Shibuya that are considered relatively dirty. Of course Japanese people like to party too but they always make sure that the streets are clean again in the morning. Interestingly enough, as I've discussed in this blog post there are hardly no trashcans in Tokyo, you are expected to take your trash home and that's what people do!
2. Everything is cute!
In other countries cute stuff is considered to be for children and isn't seen outside toy stores. In Japan cute, or kawaii is everywhere! At stations, shopping malls, billboards you will always discover Hello Kitty or what about a whole train in Pokemon style? Japanese people love to use mascots to promote anything. Cuteness can really brighten up your mood!
3. Public transportation
Public transportation in Tokyo must be one of the best in the world! Trains come every few minutes and are almost always on time. When there's a delay it's usually not for long either! You can get anywhere in Tokyo easily and even as a foreigner the system is easy to understand.
4. Convenient
Besides the public transportation there are a lot more things convenient in Japan! You're never thirsty with a vending machine on literally every corner of the street, never hungry with a convenience store a few minutes from your house. You always live on walking distance from your station and there are plenty of shops around!
5. Entertainment
There are plenty of options to entertain yourself in Tokyo which you've probably seen in our 100 things to do in Tokyo part 1 and part 2. Go drinking in a Japanese style pub, izakaya, sing your lungs out at karaoke, spend all your money on UFO catchers in an arcade or attend one of the many events being organized every weekend whether it's a traditional festival, art exhibition or a beer garden!
6. Low crime rate
Japan has a low crime rate. Most people feel really safe even when walking home alone at night. Japanese people dare to leave their phone on the table in a cafe when they go to the bathroom because the chance that someone will take it is low. Sadly I was once pick pocketed in Tokyo but I guess I was just unlucky!
7. Endless shopping
Japanese people love shopping! Tokyo has many famous chain shops that most countries have like H&M and Zara but they also have tiny boutiques and their own chain stores. Every place you will visit in Tokyo will have their own unique shops so you will never be bored!
8. Delicious cheap food
Eating out is extremely cheap in Japan and there are thousands, millions?! of yummy options throughout the city. You can get a great meal set for only 500 yen at a family restaurant or get a more traditional meal at a soba or ramen restaurant.
9. Nature
Even though the landscape of Tokyo couldn't be more city-like, nature and parks are always nearby! Next to the huge districts of Shibuya and Harajuku there's Yoyogi park where you can relax and surround yourself with nature. You can also go on a hike in Mt. Takao not too far for Tokyo!
10 Friendly
Even though people from Tokyo are known to be a bit colder towards strangers than people from other cities in Japan like Osaka, I still think they are very polite! People will always try their best to help you out when you are lost and will even ask others or walk you to your destination! Shop staff also provide excellent customer service, some might even find them too friendly!
