Must Visit Anime And Manga Museums In Japan

Since many of our wonderful TokyoTreat Japanese candy box subscribers often have aspirations of visiting the country their Japanese snacks originated from we decided to compile a list of must visit manga and anime museums across Japan!
Ishinomori Mangattan Museum – Miyagi Prefecture
The Ishinormori Manga Museum opened in 2001 to commemorate the work of Shotaro Ishinomori, the manga artist who created the immensely popular Kamen Rider Series, Super Sentai Series, and Cyborg 009.

Open hours:March – November: 09:00~18:00 (ticket window closes at 17:30)
December – February: 09:00~17:00 (ticket window closes at 16:30)
Holidays: March – November: every third Tuesday / December – February: every Tuesday
Access: 12 minute walk from JR line Ishinomaki Station.
Admission: Adults ¥800, High school/middle school ¥500, elementary school ¥200
The Ghibli Museum – Mitaka, Tokyo
Established in 2001, The Ghibli Museum showcases the work of Studio Ghibli animation studio and their well loved films like My Neighbour Totoro, etc. It's a must visit for any Studio Ghibli fan but be warned, tickets must be purchased in advance, which you can find out more information about here.

Suginami Animation Museum – Ogikubo, Tokyo
The Suginami Animation Museum is perfect for Anime lovers as it goes deep into how Anime is made and its history as well as future. It especially focuses on computer animation and has a movie theater where they screen Anime.

Kyoto International Manga Museum – Kyoto
The Kyoto International Manga Museum was opened in 2006 and has a collection of over 300,000 items! The museum has lots of large spaces to chill around and read their manga, perfect for any manga fanatic!

Toei Animation Museum – Oizumi, Tokyo
Toei the animation studio behind well loved shows like Dragon Ball, One Piece and Sailor Moon has opened a new museum last month showcasing various exhibits from the above shows as well as special limited exhibits. like the Pretty Cure exhibit currently running. It definitely seems worth a visit for those interested!

Tokyo Anime Center – Shinjuku, Tokyo
The Tokyo Anime Center hosts various limited time exhibits as well as events with voice actors, and auctions of anime goodies. If you're in the area it's well worth a check to see if there's any exhibits of your favourite series going on.

Fujiko F. Fujio Museum – Kawasaki, Kanagawa
Fujiko F. Fujio Museum showcases the creator duo's most famous work Doraemon as well as various other works and is well worth a visit for fans of the series! Though be aware, like the Ghibli Museum you must purchase tickets in advance.
