The pleasures of exquisite cuisine is a global feeling shared by all. I’m fairly certain that we have all experienced a sudden sensation of hunger once we see something that looks extremely delicious. Watching Master Chef while trying to sleep late at night? Well, guess it’s time for a midnight snack. But did you know that the anime industry also has plenty of mouth watering delights? While you might wonder how animations of food make you want to open another carton of Haagen Daz, prepare to be amazed at the delicacies that will be presented to you. Do you want to know which animes really get those salivary glands going? Well, prepare to feast your eyes, because the food world of anime may finally make Gordan speechless.

5. Ben-To (ベン・トー)

We’ve all heard about those Japanese packed lunches called ‘bentos’ right? Each bento is unique, from the arrangement of the foods to the colors to the ingredients. A surprise box of goodness if you like, a bento is truly the staple source of food for anybody.

In Ben-To, we meet our protagonist You Satou, a healthy highschool male, who happens to walk into the supermarket for a nice evening bento meal. Little does he know, when the bento boxes become half price, a battle ensues where only the strongest can come out with the half-priced bento! Instead of avoiding the battles, You Satou decides to join in to become the top fighter and snag those delicious bento boxes!

The highlight of this anime (except for the fight scenes) has to be the various bentos introduced to us throughout the show! Just looking at those delicious bento boxes gets my mouth watering…

4. Dream-Colored Pastry Chef (夢色パティシエール)

Source

Anyone got a sweet tooth? While sweets in anime mainly revolve around Valentines chocolates (most end in disasters), this anime really brings out the inner sweet lover in all of us! Cake Wars better start prostrating to this god-tier kawaii anime.

We follow our fellow student baker, Amano Ichigo, as she explores the wonders of the world of pastry making. Her climb to the top is anything but smooth sailing, but it’s the adventures that really pull us in, and make us want to root for her!

I wouldn’t blame you if you want to head to your nearest patisserie after watching this anime. It really does have that effect.

3. Dagashi Kashi (だがしかし)

Okashi, okashi! That's the word for snacks in Japanese. Dagashi Kashi revolves around the Japanese snack world. Ever been to the snack section in Donki? Well, the world of Japanese snacks is far bigger than that and Dagashi Kashi really brings out those snacks that are not as well known to the public!

The story follows a small dagashi business called Shikada Dagashi. Despite his father’s pleas, our young protagonist, Kokonotsu Shikada, is an aspiring mangaka and adamantly refuses to inherit the business. However, things start to change with the arrival of Hotaru Shidare. With her (impressive) knowledge of the world of sweets and snacks, she takes Kokonotsu on an adventure, displaying the wonders of each snack and how to enjoy them to the fullest.

Simply the different types of snacks presented in this anime is overwhelming. Looking at them, it makes me want to try all of them! The world of snacks awaits!

2. Restaurant to Another World (異世界食堂)

Source

Ever wondered what people from another world would think of Earth’s cuisine? Well, for them it's like ambrosia! In Isekai Shokudou, we can enjoy the beauty of the anime and its animations while drooling over the amazing display of cuisine that it presents. But be careful! You may find yourself dining next to some very interesting customers..

In the streets of Tokyo, the restaurant Nekoya is famous for its Western and Japanese cuisine. But every Saturday, the restaurant's doors open to people beyond Earth, where they can enjoy the Master’s cooking!

This anime truly brings the best aspects of anime together; beautiful animations, memorable characters, and of course, mouth watering food! But like any world (in this case, multi-world) famous restaurant, it does not let your wallet off easy. Worth it though? Without a doubt.

1. Food Wars (食戟のソーマ)

Source

And the king remains on his throne. Without a doubt, Food Wars or Shokugeki no Soma, is our No.1 pick for best food anime. If you have never heard of this anime and claim you watch anime, then you sir, have been living under a rock. Shokugeki no Soma really brings out the glutton in all of us. The dishes presented are all Michelin star worthy, and no doubt will cause rivers to flow from our mouths.

Suddenly one day, Yukihira Soma is enrolled by his father into one the most prestigious cooking schools in the world: Tootsuki Culinary Academy. Leaving his son with a note saying ‘If you cannot be No.1 at that school, you have no chance at surpassing me,’ starts Soma’s journey to being the No.1 chef at a school full of culinary prodigies. Boldly claiming to the whole school on the first day that everyone there is just a ‘stepping stone’ for Soma, the adventures of Soma in the culinary world takes off!

Shokugeki no Soma really defines the word ‘food-gasm.’ Not only do the dishes look world-class, the reactions of the characters tasting the food confirms that a single mouth full will send anyone to Nirvana. Shokugeki no Soma is really the king of food anime, 11/10 Yelp can confirm.

The world of food is certainly vast and there is no way we could have covered everything. But I hope this list gave you some insight on how anime is not just your fights and romcom, but the culinary world has a place to stay as well. Well, your eyes should be full now after that feast so what are you waiting for? Get watching!

Do you agree with our list? Or maybe there are some others that we missed and you think should be on here? Let us know in the comments below!
