In Japan there are so many awesome places, like Totori Prefecture and their Pokemon ambassadors, to visit during all seasons. However, many people tend to get stumped about where to go during the colder months. While Okinawa always an option, even though the beaches may not be open, we here at TokyoTreat have a few other suggestions that may top that! Check them out below.
Hokkaido is the northernmost part of Japan and is absolutely stunning all year round. It has gorgeous forests, amazing hiking, and delicious seafood! However, only during the winter can you attend the Sapporo Snow Festival! This awe-inspiring festival is held in Hokkaido's capital Sapporo and brings many people who want to witness mind blowing snow sculptures! This festival is around only for a limited time each year, so you'll have to make sure you find out when it is being held the year you plan to visit Japan.
Nagano Prefecture is located west of Tokyo and is pretty easy to access via Japan's convenient railway systems. If you are looking to take a nice warm bath and see some wild snow monkeys, then this is a place you need to add to your bucket list! In Nagano you can find a park, known as the Paradise of the Monkeys, that hosts many wild snow monkeys. They are beyond cute and watching them enjoy a warm bath is truly a sight to behold! If this doesn't warm your heart in the cold winter breeze, nothing will!
Are you a history buff? Want an experience you'll never forget? Then you should most definitely visit Shirakawago, a historical village located in Gifu Prefecture, during the winter seasons. This old town has bested the test of time and has remained true to what older Japanese villages used to look like. This town truly looks like a painting when there is a coat of fresh snow that has fallen and when you walk through this town you'll feel like you slipped back in time!
