Top 3 weird Sanrio characters

17 September 2018 by Jojo

Sanrio is a company known to create the cutest characters like My Melody, Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll that definitely have earned to be in the top 10 of kawaii characters. Of course Hello Kitty is their most famous character with an interesting history going back several decades. Recently lazy egg Gudetama has also gained popularity, not only is Gudetama cute but also unmotivated which is something a lot of people can relate to. Did you know that Sanrio has created way stranger characters in the past though? None of these have become popular on the same level as the ones mentioned above, we wonder what the reason for that is!

1. Shiri Rappers

The Shiri rappers are deliberately shaped like buttocks. On the left there's a peach, on the right a green paprika and in the middle is the main character, perhaps a potato usually depicted with a hula-hoop. The word shiri comes from the Japanese word oshiri which means butt, so they're literally a group of butt rappers! The legend goes that these butt fairies can hear humans crying and will rush to them in order to cheer them up by rapping and hula-hooping. Do you think this strange group would cheer you up ?

2. Heysuke

Heysuke is definitely one of the weirdest Sanrio characters ever! A naked baby with creepy smile. According to Sanrio's website, this is his story:

"Who? What the heck? It's a kind of a suspicious, mysterious baby. For some reason, it's laughing in the nude. Where it came from is a mystery. Is it a boy? A girl? Heysuke doesn't even know for sure. The place where it lives is right next to you. One thing is for sure, he loves to be naked. It's birthday is January 1st."

Heysuke is a mysterious creepy baby, we're not sure if we want to know more! He or she was created in the year 2000 but never became a popular character, we wonder why!

3. Hangyodon

Hangyodon literally means "Mr half-fish". He's quite different from characters like Hello Kitty and My Melody, he's not a cute animal but a monster! On the Sanrio website he's described as "a lonely romantic who wants to be a hero someday". This makes us pity him somewhat. Despite looking like a monster he doesn't behave like one which makes us pity him.

What did you think of these Sanrio characters? They're strange, aren't they? Almost as strange as the various Japanese mascots! Do you have a favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
