Do you know many Japanese street foods? How about these ones; Dango, Mochi, Takoyaki, Dorayaki…? There’s tons more that we could mention too. This time we’re going to be taking a closer look at… Taiyaki! This fish shaped snack is almost impossible to miss at a matsuri and can even be found in some conbini as a cool snack. Let’s learn a little more!
Taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake, which literal meaning is ‘baked sea bream’ as the cake imitates the shape of a Tai, or Japanese Red Seabream. Taiyaki originally came from Tokyo during the Meiji Era, around the years of 1868-1912. Unfortunately, this snack was once almost forgotten by the Japanese during World War II. However, after the end of the war, Taiyaki resurfaced (Ha! Get it? Fish shape!) sold from many food stalls in supermarkets and festivals.
Taiyaki is made using regular pancake or waffle batter. The batter is poured in a fish-shaped mold for each side. Then the filling is put on the one side and the mold is closed. In the meantime, wait until it’s cooked to a golden brown colored.
This treat is perfect to enjoy in any weather, whether it’s hot and cold, but can be especially appetizing in the Winter when warm! Now we know what it is, let’s take a look at some of the delicious flavours! o(^▽^)o
Red beans (Azuki Beans)
This is the original version of Taiyaki, using a sweet red bean filling. Seen as one of the original and classic flavors of Japan, you'll find this type at any Taiyaki store or stall you visit. Depending on the store, the filling may be creamier or may have a coarser paste with bits of red bean still inside. A lot of people have their preference which they prefer, so why not try both to see which you like?
Another classic filling that served inside the Taiyaki is custard cream. A slightly more modern, but generally safe flavour, this is usually your standard custard cream flavour that is usually found again at most Taiyaki and conbini stores. If you're a fan of this filling then you'll definitely love this one!
This one is a modern classic for Taiyaki. We’re sure that you will easily find this filling in any street food stands as it has quickly become a fan favourite! Filled with a milk chocolate cream, this can come with just the sauce being chocolate or sometimes even the Taiyaki batter being chocolate flavoured. We recommend this one for everyone with a sweet tooth!
Of course chocolate would be top of most peoples lists, but for a real taste of Japan surely Matcha can’t be beaten. After all, it’s a merger of a Japanese snack and Japanese taste! It also sometimes comes along as ice cream as a topping rather than a filling. It is also accompanied by azuki beans too, which makes a great combo. This is definitely one of the best to eat in the summer.
The last one can only be Sakura! It used to be limited to a seasonal food in Spring, when the cherry blossoms are scattered throughout Japan. But as fans of the Sakura flavour know, although it’s a little rarer to find, Sakura flavour can be found all year round! This means that if you’re lucky you can taste this unique type even outside of Spring!
