Sometimes, it’s nice just to relax and watch someone go camping and have a good time. Luckily for those camping enthusiasts out there, that’s precisely what Laid Back Camp is all about. Some people might think camping is a stressful endeavor, but this anime series aims to prove otherwise. So gather some friends, grab a sleeping bag, and get ready to go camping in style!
Rin Shima is an ordinary high school student. She completes her schoolwork, goes home, and enjoys spending time with her friends. She also really loves to go camping. One day, when Rin meets fellow student Nadeshiko Kagamihara, she is persuaded to join her school’s outdoors club. What Rin could never have imagined was how much fun so many like-minded individuals could have possibly surrounded her. Now, with a whole bunch of friends to go camping with her, Rin decides to take a tour of Japan’s camping sites.

Laid Back Camp tells viewers exactly what they’re going to get into: a laid-back show about camping. Rather than focusing on bitter rivalries or tragedy, the series simply focuses on the joys of being outside with friends. As an outdoors enthusiast, Rin gets to test different kinds of gear and see how well they work. She and her friends also get to solve problems such as how to choose the best kind of sleeping bags to use in cold weather. Unsurprisingly, wrapping someone up in tinfoil, bubble wrap, and cardboard isn’t the best option.

As the series highlights, spending quality time with friends outside is a lot of fun, and there are plenty of moments that are both enjoyable and relaxing. Enjoying the serenity of a forest, the thrill of traveling to a new park, and simply chatting with friends is what the series is all about. Anime can be pretty overwhelming at times as it often injects a healthy dose of drama into any scenario it covers, but that’s not the case here. It’s all smooth sailing, all the time.

Laid Back Camp began in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine and ran from 2015 to 2019. Soon, the series became so popular that it earned itself a three-season anime with a fourth on the way. It also received a full-length movie in 2022, entitled simply “Laid-Back Camp Movie.” As if that wasn’t enough, the series also received a live-action TV show adaptation, which aired in 2019.

The first video game adaptation of the series, Laid-Back Camp: Virtual Camp, was released in 2021. Billed as a “virtual camping adventure”, the premise of the game is to experience what it’s like to camp at Lake Motosu in Yamanashi Prefecture and Fumoto Campgrounds in Shizuoka Prefecture. The series has also received a visual novel title, as well as two different mobile games.
One of the primary reasons Laid-Back Camp is so popular and successful is that it’s based on real-life camping areas across Japan. Rather than just having its characters hang out in generic locations without any real-world equivalent, the series places them in actual locations that people can visit. Believe it or not, the series’ popularity has helped many of the parks and camping grounds that it features. There have been reports from some parks that the number of tourists visiting them has increased by more than three times the regular amount.

Not only is that a considerable number of people, but it’s also impressive to think that a simple story about high schoolers camping could have such a positive impact. The series has inspired people to get outside, meet up with friends, and make memories together. It’s inspired people to visit real parks that are benefiting from the increased traffic. The more people who visit these parks, the more money and funding they receive to maintain and operate them.
Regardless of whether you just watch the show, read the manga, or play the games, there’s plenty of fun to be had with Laid Back Camp. It’s a chill, easy-going series that champions the beauty of nature and friendship. Additionally, it serves as an excellent roadmap for those seeking to travel across Japan.

There’s so much to do and see in Japan besides just visiting Tokyo, and Laid Back Camp is the perfect example of what to do outside the big city. Have you watched the anime before?
