Actually, the first Mister Donut in Japan opened in 1971! The chain was begun in the U.S. in the 1950s, but was later sold to Dunkin’ Donuts and now only one shop remains in the U.S.. My grandfather worked for them, and traveled to Japan at one point to check on how the franchise business was going, probably in the late 1970s or early 1980s. I hope to travel to Japan one day, and when there I’m certainly going to make stop at Mister Donut :).
I miss Mr. Donut in Japan. We lived in the Kobe area from June 1995 until August 1999. I would stop at Mr. Donut after shopping in Kobe or Motomachi before taking the train to our home in Shioya. The coffee was perfection always (flavorful snd not bitter)and the donuts were perfection, not too sweet and always adorable & delicious! I miss that wonderful moment when I could relax before boarding the train to head home.
