While “Sakura” typically evokes images of Japan’s iconic flowers, it’s a popular name in anime! Characters such as Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura embody determination and growth. Explore the personalities of “Sakura” characters in Slam Dunk and Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai. Learn about their journeys of self-discovery, friendship, and romance!

Does “Sakura” always mean “cherry blossom?”

Sakura, or cherry blossoms, are famous for their beauty in Japan, but did you know that the word “sakura” can also mean other things? It can mean a fake buyer in a marketplace or a hired applause in a theater. For exams, “sakura” takes on a different meaning. It can refer to the results of an exam, like the phrase “sakura chiru,” which translates to “unfortunately failed,” or the opposite, “sakura saku,” which translates to “successfully passed.”

Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura)

Sakura Kinomoto is the main character of Cardcaptor Sakura, created by CLAMP. She is an elementary school student who accidentally releases a set of magical cards. Sakura is chosen by the guardian of the cards, Cerberus, to become the “Cardcaptor” and capture the cards. Throughout the series, Sakura matures emotionally and magically as she faces various challenges, like capturing powerful cards and dealing with personal relationships.

Tomoyo Daidouji, her best friend, supports her with fashionable outfits and records her adventures. Syaoran Li, a rival at first, later becomes a close friend and ally in capturing cards. While he starts as arrogant and aggressive, he learns to control his temper and becomes more self-aware. Despite his struggles, Sakuragi’s determination is apparent. His love for Haruko and rivalry with Rukawa originally motivated him, but his injury during the Sannoh match helped him realize his passion for basketball. As he grows, Sakuragi earns respect and admiration from his teammates and the audience, proving he’s more than a hotheaded delinquent.

Sakura Haruno (Naruto)

In Naruto, Sakura Haruno starts as a determined but insecure ninja-in-training, often placed on the sidelines. She begins with a crush on Uchiha Sasuke but eventually decides to become stronger in her way. As the series progresses, Sakura grows up a lot! During the Chunin Exams, she defeats her rival Ino Yamanaka, showing her strategic thinking and determination. At the end of Part 1, Sakura decides to study under Tsunade, hoping to catch up to her teammates.

Under Tsunade, Sakura learns medical ninjutsu and becomes a skilled combat medic. This training enhances her abilities and confidence, enabling her to contribute effectively during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Throughout the series, Sakura evolves from a lovesick girl into a powerful and independent kunoichi, earning the respect of her peers and proving herself as an equal among her teammates.

Sakurai Shinichi (Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai)

Shinichi Sakurai wants peace and quiet, but his energetic underclassman, Uzaki Hana, has other plans. Despite his introverted nature, Shinichi often finds himself hanging out with Hana, who enjoys teasing and poking fun at him. Despite his initial objections, their dynamic evolves, with Shinichi eventually developing romantic feelings for Hana, later becoming a proper couple.
