Spanning over 134 acres, Yoyogi Park offers various activities for all ages. From biking to attending lively festivals, there’s no shortage of things to do! The park’s atmosphere changes with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to autumn leaves.

Once you’re done exploring the park, you’re just steps away from spots like Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine! Ready to discover Yoyogi Park? Here are some fun things to do in the area!

Where is Yoyogi Park?

Yoyogi Park is in central Tokyo, between Shibuya and Harajuku. Its location makes it a popular spot for locals and travelers looking for an escape without leaving the city. Harajuku Station is the most convenient access point, with the park’s main entrance just a few minutes walk from the station. Surrounding the park are famous landmarks such as Meiji Shrine and Takeshita Street.

The park is divided into two main sections: the forested area, part of Meiji Shrine’s grounds, and the open lawn area, perfect for picnics and gatherings! Yoyogi Park serves different interests, whether you’re looking to relax or engage in more active pursuits. Something always happens in and around the park, from seasonal festivals to weekend flea markets!

Ride bikes!

One of the most popular activities in Yoyogi Park is riding bikes through its paths. The park offers a cycling course where visitors can rent bicycles around the park’s scenic routes. The rental station is conveniently located near the entrance, so you can easily pick up a bike (or ride tandem) and start your adventure! Biking is especially significant in spring and autumn when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities!

Attend a festival!

Yoyogi Park hosts a variety of exciting festivals throughout the year! One standout event is the Tokyo Night Market, where visitors can enjoy live music, art exhibitions, and local crafts under the park’s illuminated trees. While the market is enjoyable during the day, it shines at night with open mic performances and art displays. Stalls offer everything from food to unique items, allowing visitors to take home a piece of Tokyo!

Another major event is the Meiji Shrine Autumn Grand Festival, featuring traditional performances like yabusame and aikido demonstrations. Held every November, this festival coincides with the shrine’s chrysanthemum displays. For something more festive, the Tokyo Great Santa Run brings joy to the park as participants dressed as Santa Claus run through Yoyogi, raising money for children’s charities.

During this time, the park is filled with vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, making it a picturesque setting for a picnic.

Picnicking in Yoyogi Park is a great way to unwind and enjoy nature in the heart of the city. Bring a blanket, pack a lunch, and find a comfortable place to enjoy the beautiful scenery on the grass. Many locals also bring portable games or sports equipment, making the park a fun place to spend a day with family and friends. Don’t forget to take plenty of photos to capture the moment!

Check out Takeshita Street!

Just a short walk from Yoyogi Park, Takeshita Street in Harajuku is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Known for its quirky shops, colorful fashion, and unique atmosphere, this bustling street is one of Tokyo’s most famous shopping destinations. You can find everything from trendy clothing boutiques to funky accessories and numerous cafes and street food vendors offering Japanese treats like crepes and “rainbow cotton candy.”

Whether shopping for the latest fashion trends or just people-watching, there’s always something new to discover. The street is also home to themed cafes, including animal cafes where you can hang out with owls, cats, or hedgehogs.

Visit Kiyomasa’s Well!

Tucked away in the nearby Meiji Shrine grounds is Kiyomasa’s Well, named after Kato Kiyomasa, a famous samurai and castle builder from Japan’s feudal era. Known for its pristine water, Kiyomasa’s Well is considered a power spot in Japanese culture, where visitors seek good fortune and prosperity. Many people believe that the well’s water holds special powers and often visit to make a wish or pray for good luck.
